Project Management

The benefits of effective project management range from improved project cycle times to higher levels of customer satisfaction. Project management does not always prevent problems or unexpected deviations from plan. What it does do is provide a standard set of processes for dealing with contingencies when they happen. With sound project management, your organization has a much greater likelihood of completing projects on time, on budget, and to an acceptable level of quality. Some additional benefits of effective project management include:

The benefits are clear, but the solution is not always as obvious. A brief review of the project management framework used by the Project Management Institute (www.pmi.org) reveals 12 main sections with over 40 subsections. The COBIT framework used by the IT Governance Institute includes this diagram that illustrates over 1,900 items addressed within the COBIT Hierarchy.
 

Sometimes it seems that the benefits of project management get lost in the overwhelming level of detail offered by most recognized PM frameworks and the applications that support them.  In its essentials, project management boils down to the following key activities:

• Decide what you are going to do
• Break it down into its basic components
• Add timelines and assign responsibility
• Document all of the above
• Pass it around for input from the people involved or impacted
• Modify it based on input
• Begin work
• Monitor progress regularly
• Document changes
